About the Group

CfE’s vision derives from a critical understanding of the functioning of different centres for education in India, the present context of education within the country and the existing scenario of education in Andhra Pradesh. CfE’s vision also draws from the work that has already commenced at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. The Centre’s vision and operational document is positioned within this larger understanding of what constitutes the field of education so that its interventions are effective for the process of developing the discipline and practice of education.

The Centre for Education at TISS Hyderabad has as its role model all such Centres (in India as well as abroad) that have made a mark in the wider field of education by establishing a critical and productive interface with the State. The vision of CfE involves establishing and sustaining an ongoing interaction with the State such that both the dimensions of critical enquiry as well as active engagement with the practice of education are met.In other words, all practice-oriented initiatives taken up by CfE will be backed by critical research and research itself will be guided by an understanding of relevance, both to the process of knowledge building as well as practice orientation.

CfE will also strive to strike a balance between achieving academic excellence on the one hand and self-reflexive involvement with the practice of teaching/training on the other. Since CfE views critical thinking in education and educational practice as closely interlinked, it will seek to guard against the separation or the hierarchisation of the two functions. This core dimension of CfE’s vision will direct all the initiatives that the Centre takes up, especially in relation to teaching, research, policy level engagement and intervention
