Raj from Delhi shared his problems of not being able to find any fruit flies in his baits, Raj Set up a new closed Banana Bait on 5th of Feb and had to discard the setup on 10th of Feb because of Fungal growth on the bait. Raj concludes that there are no Fruit Flies in his area. Which setup or how can Raj get his hands on Fruit flies? Are there no fruit flies in Delhi? If there are where are they?
We talked about Rajs Long Term Objective, which was to observe the effect of light on their life cycle and can thay cause a difference in the life span. But what is the difference Life cycle and Life Span? We understood the meaning and difference about life cycle as a developmental stages between birth and death whereas life span was time between birth and death.

Furthermore we talked about Aasthas Model, Butterflies. The caterpillars were placed over a Refrigerator in a transparent box, with compartments. Aastha got these caterpillars on 4th of January, one of the 2 caterpillars was comparatively big in size and molted into Pupae on 23th of January and other on 26th January. Thanks to Hina Ma’ams inputs we understood that the caterpillars turn to Pupae in a span of 20 to 22 days whereas the pupae takes around 15 to 20 days to turn into a Butterfly. So around 20 days have passed from the day of Pupation… why no butterfly or moth can be seen in the setup?
The talk shifted quickly to what was the difference between Moths and Buttefly. Moths tend to have closed wings while sitting whereas Butteflies have it open, also the antennae is hooked in one while it is different in another.
In this discussion, we came across a new word which was Lepidoptera, what is Lepidoptera? Aastha said Lepidoptera is an order of Butteflies and Moths… so how do we identify something as Lepidoptera? A very interesting answer cqme as they have Jointed Appendages. Ritik pointed out that he remembers Moina having Jointed Appendages. So are Moinas Lepidoptera or Insecta? So we tried to compare Moina with Butterfly to understand the classification. While discussing Abhijith Sir had a very interesting question which said As drosophila has one pair of wings modified to halteres did the two wings fly (fruitfly) evolve from the four wings fly(moth) by some mutation producing halteres instead of wings? What are Halteres? What is Bithorax Gene?..
We discussed about my Vermi Pit setup and tried to understand how Vermi Pits function.
