Fingernail growth can be studied easily without a laboratory. In this observation, I tracked the growth of a fingernail for 77 days, from 9 April 2026 to 25 June 2026.
A small ink mark was made near the base of the nail on 9 April 2026 during the Kerala Election. Photographs were taken at different intervals to observe how far the mark moved towards the fingertip as the nail grew. The photographs were taken over 1 mm × 1 mm graph paper, which helped estimate growth more accurately.
Observations
- 9 April – Day 1: The initial ink mark was made.
- 10 April – Day 2: The mark began to separate from the skin.
- 16 April – Day 8: The ink on the skin faded, leaving a clear mark on the nail.
- 20 April – Day 12: The mark had visibly moved forward.
- 26 April – Day 18: Further nail growth was observed.
- 7 May – Day 29: The mark reached the middle part of the nail.
- 27 May – Day 49: The mark moved towards the upper part of the nail.
- 10 June – Day 63: The mark reached close to the end of the nail bed.
- 25 June – Day 77: The mark reached the free edge of the nail.

Conclusion
Over the 77-day observation period, the fingernail grew approximately 8.5 mm, giving an average growth rate of about 0.11 mm per day or 3.31 mm per month.
This observation shows that biological growth can be studied using simple methods. A small mark, regular photographs, and graph paper were enough to track and measure the nail’s movement over time. The method is simple, inexpensive, and suitable for a basic long-term self-observation study.
