Agar or agar-agar is a jelly-like substance, obtained from red algae. Agar is a mixture of two components: the linear polysaccharide agarose, and a heterogeneous mixture of smaller molecules called agaropectin.
It’s basically a gelatinous substance obtained from certain red seaweeds and used in biological culture media and as a thickener in foods.

The most simple characteristic to use to differentiate the two is to look at the genitalia of the flies. Males have dark, rounded genitalia at the tip of their abdomen, whereas females have light, pointed genitalia. Male Drosophila are generally smaller than their female counterparts and have a darker abdomen
