Cardamine: a comparitive view

Cardamine is very much similar to a well known plant model organism that’s Arabidopsis thaliana since both belongs to the same family Brassicaceae or Mustard family: which includes Mustard, Cabbage, Reddish, turnip, Broccoli etc.

The word cardamine comes from the Greek worm Kardamine meaning water cress, water cress is a leaf vegetable, Cress:which can be eaten raw or as a salad.

Cardamine is widely available across the India but Arabidopsis is an European species, hence required the same environment to be cultured in India. Arabidopsis thaliana has it’s entire genome sequenced in 2001 and the genome of Cardamine hirsuta is also sequenced

The Cardamine hirsuta genome offers insight into the evolution of morphological diversity.

How Cardamine is similar and dissimilar to this well known Model system?..
Both Cardamine and Arabidopsis have Basal and Cauline leaves(leaves on upper surface of stem)
Both are the flowering plants and have four sepals, four petals and 6 stamens in the arrangement of 4+2 that’s 4 Inner longer and 2 outer short.Except C. hirsuta which has only 4 stamens, 2 outer stamens are lost.
Both have dry fruit.
Cardamine shows diversity in the leaf shape, Cardamine has compound leaves and Arabidopsis thaliana has simple leaves.

Cardamine plants are found growing wild across India from Kerala to Jammu & Kashmir

Story of CUBE Home Lab Moradabad
Cardamine plants were found growing across the roadside in Nainital Uttara Khand

Growing on a rocky surface(Date: 17th November 2020)

And these plants were then brought to Moradabad UP from Nainital and were replanted.
