In yesterday’s ChatShaala, cubists shared observations from their ongoing home-lab experiments: @Arunan @KiranKalakotiR @2020ugchsncnseethala @magpie @Ayana_Sudheer
- Seed Germination Study
Dhanwika presented a simple and effective seed germination experiment using moong and chickpea. Within 24 hours at room temperature (20–25°C), the seeds began to germinate. This comparison encouraged participants to explore which seed germinates faster and why.
- Fruitfly Food Preference Test (FPT)
A collaborative experiment was discussed across three locations : Kozhikode (Ayana), Trivandrum (Sailekshmi), and Saudi Arabia (Sanika).
Fruits used : Tomato, ripe mango, lemon, orange, and banana.
Setup : Transparent containers placed in different environments (kitchen and outside hall) to observe fruitfly behavior like feeding, mating, sleeping, etc.
Notably, tomatoes attracted the most flies in both locations.
Queries to Reflect and Discuss :
Why does tomato consistently attract fruitflies more than other fruits?
What could be the environmental factors (temperature, light, smell) influencing the difference in fly activity inside and outside?
In seed germination, does the type of seed coat affect germination speed?
Let us continue these experiments and bring more data in upcoming ChatShaalas!
