Developing Acid-Base indicator in Homelabs

[10:27 pm, 28/3/2025] Theertha: What is bio-inorganic chemistry @Seethalakhmi

Congratulations to @Susanta Tanti CUBE for bringing new Cubists to Chatshaala.

[10:27 pm, 28/3/2025] Theertha: Can anyone predict what this picture is about?

[10:27 pm, 28/3/2025] Theertha: Seethalakshmi says Homelab is a Hero,Do you agree?

How does Homelab work?

How can we perform pH detection in college?

Listed Homelab Acid-Base indicater:

  1. Turmeric
    2)petals of Hibiscus
    3)Petals of clitoria
    4)Red cabbage
  2. Beetroot

How does each of the above show a colour difference?

Colour Change Detection Using Hibiscus: Acid and Alkali – A Way to Develop pH Paper at Home:

I took 9 hibiscus flowers and grinded with ~50 ml of water. The extract was then filtered and divided into three bottles labeled C, T1, and T2.

Bottle C (control) was half-filled with the extract and then added with water.

Bottle T1 was half-filled with the extract and treated with vinegar (acid).

Bottle T2 was half-filled with the extract and treated with soap water (alkali).

Observations:
After shaking, the control (C) showed the same color as initially observed.
Test 1 (T1), treated with acid (vinegar), turned red.
Test 2 (T2), treated with alkali (soap water), turned green.

Chatshaala discussions:

CUBE Chatshaala: How can I improve this setup to develop Hibiscus pH paper?

My expectation was to get a dark red color, and I got a pink coloration. Thank you for your setup to make turmeric pH paper, @⁨ayanasudheer⁩ that inspired me to do with hibiscus petals.

Can we develop PH paper at Homelabs?

Do you have Hibiscus or any colored plant part to make a ph paper to differentiate acid and base ?

Hibiscus Petals for Making pH Paper at Home!

I took one hibiscus flower, which had 5 petals.
Rubbed the petals over a white paper (5×2.5 cm,:12.5 cm²).
Airdried the paper.
Added drops of water as a control and vinegar (acid) as a test to observe the color change.

Observation: A pink color appeared immediately after the acid was added to the hibiscus paper.

Clitoria ternatea for Acid-base testing at home

Preparation of pH paper: Clitoria flower is rubbed over a white sheet of paper. Kept 2 minutes for drying.

Testing Acid and base:

A drop of vinegar is added to one end of the paper. A drop of soap detergent is added to another end.

Observation: Paper turned from blue to PINK when vinegar is added. Paper turned from blue to GREEN when soap detergent is added

Turmeric paper as natural pH paper.

When soap detergent was added, yellow colour turned to RED.
When citrus was rubbed on the red colored region, the colour changed back to YELLOW

When lemon extract is applied, the colour of periwinkle stain turned to Pink and when soap water is added, colour turned to Light Green

I tried using Purple petunia flower. Vinegar turned purple to greenish and soap turned purple to light brown.

Anthocyanins are flavonoid pigments synthesized in the cytoplasm and stored inside vacuoles. Many plant species accumulate densely packed, 3- to 10-μm diameter anthocyanin deposits called anthocyanin vacuolar inclusions (Ahttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4815043/#:~:text=Anthocyanins%20are%20flavonoid%20pigments%20synthesized,anthocyanin%20vacuolar%20inclusions%20(AVIs).

Objective: To observe if there is any color change when I add a drop of vinegar to the hibiscus petal.
Set-up: Two hibiscus petals were taken.
Petal 1 (Control): Added two drops of water.
Petal 2 (Test): Added two drops of vinegar.
Observation: No color change was observed just after adding the Vineger and water.

In the hibiscus petal, neither vinegar nor water drops caused any color change just after adding. With the hibiscus pH paper, a pale pink color appeared immediately just after adding the vinegar drop, while no color change was observed when water drops were added.
