Effect of Starvation on Movement and Sleep of fruitflies

Hullo,This is Homelab Kolkata and myself Batul Pipewala. My Collaborators are Rahul Khushwaha,Ayaanasudheer,Shehrebanu Pipewala,Dr Arunan
I am sharing my experiment on Movement of Fed and Starved fruitflies belonging to the same species.
My single line culture of fruitfly is called Shehre’25 .
My Aim is to show that Starved flies sleep less compared to Fed flies.
12 flies were kept in a bottle containing moist cotton. The flies were starved for 6hrs before the expt.
Another 12 flies of same age were kept.in a bottle containing Tomato Rava Sugar Vinegar medium. This was the Fed flies.
Readings are taken every hour for 24hrs.The mouth of the bottle has a cloth which is lightly touched to make the flies underneath move if awake.A video of 30secs is captured.

Repeat Experiment 4.30pm 26/8/25
Aim of the experiment :Effect on movement of fed and starved flies .Starved flies move for more time in 24hrs and hence sleep less.
The starved flies are without food for 6hrs.This time a moist cotton is provided for the starved flies to get moisture.12flies are there in each bottle. The cloth at the mouth will be touched softly to make flies resting there move if not asleep.
Observation at 4.30pm
6flies are moving in each fed and starved bottle.

5.30pm Observation Starved flies all 12 are active and moving 3 are on the moist cotton, drinking water.
Fed flies all 12 are on the medium feeding.

9pm 26/8/25 Fed flies only 1 fly is moving
Starved flies 7flies are moving.

10pm Fed flies only 1 fly is moving
Starved flies 8flies are moving

These readings were continued till 4pm on the next day 27/8/25.
The results are as follows

Observations and Inference
The Starved flies move more than the Fed flies and hence sleep less.
