Investigating the Effect of Milk on Moina Population Growth and Survival

Experiment:
Investigating the Effect of Milk on Moina Population Growth and Survival

Objectives:
To understand the role of milk in the moina population.

Hypotheses

Moina can survive for 1-2 weeks even without adding milk.
*On adding 1 drop of milk every two days can support moina growth *
*Low milk concentrations when added daily increase moina population growth since it increase the bacteria. *
Higher milk concentrations (4-6 drops daily) causes low oxygen in water, thereby less moina growth and they may turn “red” as a survival strategy.

Homelab Set up

5 plastic bottles (500ml), filled up to ~300ml dechlorinated water. Added around 30 moina to each bottle.
One bottle is kept as control (bottle D no milk will be added).
Bottle A- One drop of milk will be added on every two days
Bottle B- One drop of milk will be added daily
Bottle C- 4 drops of milk added daily
Bottle E- 6 drops of milk added daily

What is the basis of your hypothesis that moina can survive without milk for 2 weeks?

What insights you have about moina population growth as of now?

Please keep updating your findings on metastudio, it’s an interesting question you are addressing.:+1:t2::smiling_face:

It can grow rapidly. Their females can undergo asexual reproduction without male fertilization under favorable conditions. And various factors like population density in the bottle, photoperiod, food availability effects their growth. Yes @Abhi0703 I will update the results of my Homelab Study
