Making of a Bamboo Rack

Wooden bamboo rack

In September, we purchased several bamboos for LA. Each bamboo was more than 20ft long. Due to their height they could get into the hall through the staircase. Some of the students went down and lifted them vertically so that one of the students could pick each bamboo through the window and pull them up into the hall. After that, we into less than 10ft pieces. The bamboos were both hollow and solid.

We had large boxes and cartons, along with CUBE and gnowledge lab material from HBCSE TIFR, which we placed in the middle of the hall to partition the hall. We thought, why not make a wide rack and place the boxes in it, we may have a better space organization. As bamboo and ply boards are available, we decided to go ahead with the idea.

The Construction:

13th November,

The hall had an approximately 2ft wide beam on the roof, separating the hall. We started erecting 7ft long solid bamboos, and fixed them to the beam with clamps.

Racks are being built along the length of the beam dividing the hall.

Getting ready to tie bamboo sticks as cross members.

16 80cm long sticks are made.

We tied the cross members to the vertically standing poles with rope made of coconut fibre. After some research about the best tie we could use, we learned to do Japanese square leash.

@GN was seen testing the strength of the ties.

Rack skeleton completed.

14th November, wooden planks inserted. We measured the size about 8x2ft of a single column then same goes for the rest of them.

We managed to get the planks to the perfect level despite using round bamboos as supporting structures. We then removed the planks for sanding and a layer of melamine coat to protect the bare wood planks.

We made four rows with the ply, as shown in the photos. The entire process took us two to three days.

Floor space was cleared after keeping all the books and files cartons in the newly built rack.

By the bamboo, for the bamboo of the bamboo;

15th November, We created a bamboo storage corner with bamboos and stored them at one place. This project helped us maximize our storage space effectively. All the bamboos went to a corner.

We made more projects with bamboo; stay tuned for such updates!
