can you also post the notes and screenshots of the white board? That becomes a great way of journaling the events in a public space. @KiranyadavR, @Lydia and @drishtantmkawale

This photograph taken originally by Aswathy Suresh from Kerala, was presented in the ChatShaala. The thing which grabbed everyone’s attention in this photograph was that more number of flies were seen on the wet area of the paper and not on the tomato (usually, it is vice versa)!

In this whiteboard image, we made a hypothesis and tried to disprove the hypothesis by discussing on them. The discussion was on the question that why are the most number of flies seen on the periphery of the liquid released from the tomato and why not on the tomato itself? Is it something related with the dry area and wet area near the tomato? Are the flies avoiding the wet area and preferring the dry area?

One of the CUBist made a comment that the fluids released from the tomato must be having some component like sugars, which is giving rise to a pungent smell. We were discussing on how is a sugar (Glucose taken as an example), is broken down into such a compound (Acid and Alcohol), which attracts the flies!
Here, an image taken from the internet was presented as a reference to the process of Alcoholic fermentation.

CUBE Chatshaala on 12th August 2020.
