We had discussed about Giant african snails(Land snail), @aswathy has taken a brave initiative and made a simple set up to culture snails in CUBE HOME LAB

We had also discussed about the research question LEARNING AND MEMORY which cubists are addressing in Snail Model system.
The Discussion has deepens our understanding of basic Neuroscience by talking about very basic and simple terms like tolerance , get used to, and learn to tolerate.

Tolerance can be the form of Learning .
So when the tentacle of snail is touched for the first time snail withdraw it’s tentacle but on successive touches snail will learn that the touch is not harmful and it’s responding…

Very nice diagram drawn by @aswathy to understand what happens inside the body of an organism when the first touch is given?..

Left Tentacle is touched by soft cotton bud and this message is passes to the brain in blue through the Pink color Neuron and than the message is transferred to the black color muscles through Orange color Neuron, when message is received by the black color Neuron ,muscle got contract and hence Tentacle is withdrawals…

An excellent and very simple model to understand the basics…

Another assumption was made on the basis of observations that after five touches the snail will stop withdrawing it’s tentacle as snail would have learned that the touch is harmless…

What will happen inside the body of the snail when 6th touch will be given?..

Some Assumtions were made which are as follows.

  1. Muscle will stop responding as muscle may get tired.

  2. Pink colour neuron will stop responding.

  3. Orange color Neuron will not pass the signal

  4. Or Brain will not pass the message to the orange color neuron on the 6th touch…

So slowly we had ruled out the least possibilities

First muscle get tired…
How do we rule out this possibility?..
What would happen when on the 6th touch if we increase the intensity of stimulus?.. if muscle get tired ideally tentacle should not retract…

Than what about other assumptions?..

We had also discussed about what’s happening inside this blue box?..

An interneuron is making connection between pink color Neuron and orange colour Neuron.

Although the orientation if pink color color need to be change but we got to know that what would happen inside the brain on the 6th touch?..

@komal sir joined gave input on the synapse?.
Signal will only be passed when the space between two neuron is filled with neurotransmitter…

@aswathy @Rechel @komal @lakshmy and others please give inputs…
