Sexcombs in Fruitflies

Pics showing 9 teeth of sex comb in my single line culture fruitflies. Homelab Kolkata BatulP

[11/01, 10:52 am] Rahul CUBE: Males are distinctly differentiated by their genitals. Their lower abdomen is black on the dorsal side. Also, they have sex combs (fine black hair bristles on their first pair of appendage) that helps them during courtship.

Smaller than females in general.

[31/03, 11:45 am] Himanshu Joshi: Are you sure D Melanogaster has 9 teeths! This reference from the Data collected in Bangladesh says :
The sex comb teeth number and arrangement were distinct for all three species. D. melanogaster had one row of 10 - 11 teeth in the sex comb. D. ananassae had eight rows of teeth in the sex comb possessing 32 - 33 teeth in total. D. bipectinata had 2 - 3 rows of teeth in the sex comb and total teeth number varied from 11 to 15. Among three species, sex comb teeth number of D. bipectinata varied most. Eleven different patterns (n=20) in sex comb were observed in D. bipectinata indicating significant diversity within species. Variation in pupation sites among three species was also observed in the laboratory condition.D. bipectinata pupated on the food medium, whereas other two species pupated on the vial wall
Where does the pupation happened in your species of Drosophila ?

sex combs can change on microevolutionary timescales and differ spectacularly among closely related species, providing opportunities for direct genetic analysis and for integrating developmental and population-genetic approaches.

Arunan sir: Here, the sex comb is very clear and looks like drugs affect the characteristics of sex comb.
Please comment. @⁨Batul Ma’am⁩.

[16/06, 9:45 am] Batul Ma’am: Why do laboratory bred males show more variation in sex comb teeth number than natural populations? Do they face more selection pressure from females in the bottle?
What does variation in teeth number of male sex comb on the first leg tell us about evolution?
Comparing it to a bird,if the male is more brightly colored will it attract more females and hence reproduce more? The same will apply to the external sexual phenotype in fruitfly males which have a sex comb that helps grasp the female during copulation.

[16/06, 9:56 am] Batul Ma’am: My single line culture Shehre of Kolkata showed variation in teeth number within the species.this pic is under 10X and the Pic below under 45X,
Can you count the number of teeth in the sex comb of these two males of single line culture Shehre from two different generations.

What is the importance of the sex comb? Does the number of sex combs influence mating in fruitflies? @⁨Batul Ma’am⁩ @⁨~Khushi ⁩ @⁨~Sweta She/her⁩ & others.

“sex combs can change on microevolutionary timescales and differ spectacularly among closely related species, providing opportunities for direct genetic analysis and for integrating developmental and population-genetic approaches. Sex comb evolution is associated with the origin of novel interactions between HOX and sex determination genes.”
