The isolation of Earthworms and soil nematodes

Earthworms can be found in moist soil. To isolate earthworms, we can choose soil where plants are growing, and we can also look for earthworm castings as one of the indicators.

We discussed the isolation of earthworms in Sailakshmi’s home.

Like earthworms, we have another soil organism called nematodes. Cubists are interested in C. elegans, a four-time Nobel Prize winner, for isolation in Indian soil.

We also discussed the procedures.

Later , we discussed about the discovery of miRNA, which led to the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2024.

Major questions are addressed:

1)How does the regeneration in Chlorohydra, Earthworm and planaria different?

When a hydra is cut in half, the half containing the head will regenerate a new basal disc, and the half containing the basal disc will regenerate a new head. Moreover, if a hydra is cut into several portions, the middle portions will regenerate both heads and basal discs at their appropriate ends. Regeneration - Developmental Biology - NCBI Bookshelf.
