What are the monsoons in Kerala?
Kerala experiences two types of monsoons: the Southwest Monsoon and the Northeast Monsoon.
Why are they called so?
The Southwest Monsoon originates from the Arabian Sea and moves toward the Indian subcontinent.
The Northeast Monsoon begins in the Bay of Bengal and affects Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Karnataka.

[20/05, 12:26 pm] ayanasudheer: In Kerala , Southwest monsoon (Kalavarsham) from june - september. In malayalam we also call it Edavappaathi which means in the middle of the malayalam month “Edavam”. It is called so because the rain starts by the middle of May or early June. The North East Monsoon is during mid-October, in the month of Thulam according to the Malayalam calendar and is hence called the Thulavarsham.
What do you say @Theertha @Seethalakhmi

To the north are the inland Red Sea and Persian Gulf. The Arabian Sea is to the northwest, and the Andaman Sea to the northeast. The large gulfs of Aden and Oman are to the northwest, the Bay of Bengal is to the northeast, and the Great Australian Bight is off the southern coast of Australia.

[20/05, 1:26 pm] vickram: Interestingly, the ocean to the south of the Indian Ocean, and all the other oceans in the southern hemisphere, is sometimes called the Southern Ocean.
But it is also called the Southern River, a body of water that moves at a tremendous velocity around Antarctica, and therefore around the whole southern part of the globe, without any land break. Because of this high velocity, the water is distinctly different from that of other oceans, justifying the name river.
I have seen photos of some southern islands, where the water levels between the Pacific and the Southern Ocean are visibly different. A vessel that sails from one ocean to the other will, literally, go over a bump.

[20/05, 12:48 pm] Theertha: The names of the malayalam months are derived from the constellations in which Sun is present. The first malayalam month Chingam is named from the constellation Leo and so on.
