Story of hunting for Moina

Here’s my story of finding moina…do soare 5 mins to read it :ghost::ghost:

So, Let me first tell you what moina is?
Moina is a small organism living in fresh water. They are crustacean like other organism such as prawns, crabs, etc… Here’s its scientific Classification…
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Subphylum: Crustacea
Class: Branchiopoda
Superorder: Diplostraca
Order: Anomopoda
Family: Moinidae
Genus: Moina

I had seen photos of many cubists culturing moina, but it was first time to observe moina and culture it in my homelab…:innocent:

I thought getting moina, would be very difficult
In order to get moina ,I asked my teacher she said that aquarium shops must be selling it as a dried feed in bottles, But she wasn’t sure of live ones at aquarium shop. I first asked at an aquarium shop in Miramar, Panjim but they didn’t have it …:frowning:
Another teacher said I could get them in freshwater

Later I remember a lake near Miramar, La- Campala colony the way from where I go to college… I sent a video to @Arunan Sir whether I could get moina/daphnia in that water…Sir said that Any fresh bitter body like this likely to have water fleas. Let’s collect and look for… but water was green and dirty so I thought it will mostly not have moina and daphnia in it…

But still I went to the lake on 8th of October and collected the water sample…
I went with my uncle, we used a mug and tied rope to it and collected the water into a one litre plastic bottle and filled 3/4th of it with water and came back home…

I posted the photos on group and asked if moina can be found in such green water sample… Cubists told me to look for movement in water :sweat_drops: but I couldn’t see any organisms just green fragments all in the bottle :sleepy:… They advised to use light and see the bottle and observe for movement…
I tried it and found small white particles moving!..that was the moment when I felt that Ah! there is something atleast in this water other than all green!! But who knew it is moina or not…

I went to NIO, Donapaula as they would have it in Marine Fisheries research sector… with a great effort got a visiting card and could meet Dr. Kawlekar Sir there…I had a discussion with him and He told that they strictly work with marine water and moinas are found in fresh water but he said he would check out if anyone is working with it and let me know through whatsapp…

“Why not check those white bodies under microscope” & yes I got college teacher’s support and we tried to observe it under microscope…

At first we prepared slide by taking glass slide and coverslip but we couldn’t see any organism under
microscope…but we didn’t leave hope…
We called lab assistant and teacher to help us. We took a glass slide with the help of a dropper we removed the water along with white moving body (did not cover with coverslip) used cotton threads to trap the organism from moving & then we saw copepod, algae, spirulina algae, and a small creature that looked to be one of the larval stage of crustacean…
It was so nice to see different organism from the lake water sample…
But the aim was moina / daphnia…

We looked out into google to compare what we got with images of daphnia & moina…

Finally we saw the small creature that looked like larva of crustacean in it’s different body shape…
( It was actually turning from dorsal to ventral side) that looked like daphnia and my teachers said that yes it’s a daphnia…, but we weren’t very sure that it’s daphnia and not moina…

It was a TINKE ( Things I Never Knew Earlier) moment for all of us that these organism in it’s dorsal side look like this…

Later on looking at the differences between moina and daphnia we concluded that it was MOINA & NOT DAPHNIA…
I was so happy that finally I got moinas :partying_face::partying_face:

It was another TINKE moment for classmates who never heard about moina before …

Good observations. Nice summary. How did you find out it was Moina and not Daphnia?

There are certain morphological differences between Moina and Daphnia …

Moina has :-
• 2apical spine
• it has antennules which are small antennae like structure near mouth region
• It’s ventral body shape is not rounded, like it’s curved near the thoracic region…

Daphnia has:-
•1 apical spine
• no antennules
• ventral body shape is rounded
