[05/04, 10:53 am] Arunan sir : How about doing a Good Preference Test to study 6 times Nobel Prize winner Fruitflies at your CUBE HomeLab? @ayanasudheer.

Food Preference Test in Fruitflies
17/04/25; 9.30am
Hypothesis: Plate A attract flies and more number of flies will be on tomato.
Two plates are set up at 9.30 am on the kitchen slab. Plate A (Positive Control) has over ripe grapes, a slice of orange, onion, banana peel with a slice of tomato. On Plate B, over ripe grapes, a slice of orange, onion, banana peel is kept without tomato.
Lets observe which of these attracts flies and when, both in the presence and absence of tomato!

Ayana has been actively doing food preference tests in fruit flies.
Here are Chatshaala discussions about Ayana’s experimental setups. @Ayana_Sudheer @Arunan @KiranKalakotiR @Sailekshmi and others.
Food preference test-Fruitfly : Ayana’s Homelab
From Ayana’s Setup 1:7/04/2025
Tomato slice, lemon slice, onion slice, ripe banana slice, and raw mango were placed.
Tomato was consistently the most attractive to the fruit flies.
Raw mango and lemon attracted flies only once during the 7hr observation period.
Ayana’s Setup 2:15/04/2025
Fruit flies were attracted only to the tomato.
No flies were observed on grapes or overripe banana,11 hr of observations.
Preliminary Conclusion: Tomato appears to be the most preferred food of fruit flies.
Ayana’s Setup 3:16/04/2025
Cucumber slice, ripe banana peel, 1-dayold ripe banana slice, and 1-dayold grapes were used.
After 6.30 hours, 9 flies were observed on the banana peel and 2 flies on fresh orange and one in Onion
What is a negative and positive control?
What in tomato attracts fruitflies?
If we replace tomato with other solanaceae member ,do we expect the same results?
How do Fruitfly see objects? How human vision is different from Fruitflies?

What is a Positive Control?
A positive control is a sample that is treated in a way that is known to produce a positive result. This control confirms that the experiment is capable of producing results under the experimental conditions. By including a positive control, scientists can verify that the experimental procedure is functioning as expected.
For example, in a Western blot experiment designed to detect a specific protein, a cell lysate known to express the protein of interest would be used as a positive control. The presence of a band corresponding to the protein on the blot demonstrates that the Western blot procedure is working correctly, the antibodies are binding as expected, and the detection reagents are functional.

Celebrating Ayana’s food preference test in Fruitfly.
How to believe/conclude the experimental results?
Can we stress on the reproducibility of the results to minimise the error?@Sailekshmi CUBE @ayanasudheer @~Kiran Kalakoti @Arunan sir and others
How to introduce Fruitfly?
Does Fruitfly attract fruit only ?
If we keep mixture of fruits and vegetables together, what will be the most preferred one ?
Ayana’s says tomato is the most preferred food for Fruitfly,Do you agree ? @Sailekshmi CUBE @Arunan sir @ayanasudheer and others.
Can we culture fruitflies in a bottle with tomato pieces?@ayanasudheer nd others
